Ka'duku

Projekt:
This artistic practice was an opportunity to implement different technologies – rituals, rooted walks, ancestral stories, land art, collage, fanzine, augmented reality – conducive to generate a radical change in the way we relate to the territory, to the non-human and ancestral beings that inhabit it.

The modern-western way of thinking has considered nature as something external to human beings. This dissociation has led to the creation of sacrifice zones in the peripheries for the benefit of capital accumulation in the centres of power, and has triggered the current climate crisis. However, for many populations this way of understanding the world is alien and their ways of life are based on relationships of deep reciprocity, both among humans and with non-human and more-than-human beings.

To change the dissociated way of thinking ourselves out of nature, we begin the relationship with the Gallmannsegg territory by bringing offerings in cotton elements collected before arriving: thoughts, activities, food... These gifts, as well as the intention of the visit are deposited in a Ka'duku* and from there they were shared with the non-human beings that inhabit the territory. Reciprocally they gave us permission to be there and granted us their kindnesses during our stay. Stories about the territory, Ka'dukus and different beings were revealed to us and materialized in small sculptures and images, both analogue and digital. The learned way of relating to the territory began to crack and we accessed complex ways of deep reciprocity with the more-than-human beings that inhabit it.

*Ka'duku, is an Arhuaca word to designate the places that fulfil the task of receiving offerings and the work of receiving the offerings and intentions and distributing them to non-human beings that inhabit the territory. Thanks to Ati Gúndiwa for introducing us to this practice.
